The legal team representing the National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially lodged a habeas corpus petition in court, seeking the urgent production of Edward Rogers Ssebuufu—widely recognized by his stage name, Eddie Mutwe—who was reportedly abducted over the past weekend under unclear circumstances. The petition aims to compel the authorities to present him before court and account for his whereabouts.
Speaking during a press briefing held on Wednesday at the NUP party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, strongly condemned the continued targeting and disappearance of opposition members. He called on the government to immediately release not only Eddie Mutwe but all individuals affiliated with NUP who have been subjected to unlawful arrests, enforced disappearances, or prolonged detention without trial.
Kyagulanyi decried the growing trend of state repression, which he says is being used to silence dissent and intimidate members of the opposition. He emphasized that the ongoing abductions are a gross violation of human rights and a direct attack on democratic principles. The party maintains that many of its supporters have been arbitrarily arrested, some held in unknown locations, and others tortured—an alarming situation they say reflects the deteriorating rule of law in the country.
