With schools reopening across Uganda, the police have stepped up road safety measures to prevent accidents and manage increased traffic congestion. Authorities say the return of students to classrooms often leads to higher pedestrian and vehicle movement, which can contribute to road mishaps.
Traffic police have deployed additional officers at major intersections, school zones, and bus stops to ensure smooth flow and compliance with traffic laws. Drivers are being urged to exercise caution, especially around areas frequented by children.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” said a senior traffic official. “We are committed to protecting our children, motorists, and pedestrians as traffic increases in this school term.”
Measures include speed checks, monitoring of public transport vehicles, and awareness campaigns targeting both drivers and students. Parents are also encouraged to ensure that children use pedestrian crossings and wear reflective clothing where necessary.
Previous school terms have seen spikes in accidents involving students and motorcycles. The police campaign aims to reduce such incidents and foster a culture of responsible driving and safe commuting.
As the academic year begins, authorities emphasize vigilance, noting that prevention and awareness are key to keeping Uganda’s roads safe for everyone.
